The Server Project
This page will primarily display the policies for the computers in the Biorobotics and IGERT labs at Case Western Reserve University. In other words, this will convey the official policies regarding the computers in Glennan 813, 814, and 816 as well as the new IGERT office (Wickendon basement).
If you have any questions, please look at the FAQ located here first, since there will be a veritable plethora of information stored on that page. If you still can't find the answer you are looking for, then by all means, ask me.
Workstation Policies
- Any violation of the domain policies will result in the immediate suspension of your user account.
- Any workstation administrated by the Biorobotics domain controller can be formatted and reinstalled at any time, without warning.
- Users are not to install programs onto workstations in the Biorobotics domain.
- Users will not have access to the local hard drives of workstations. Their files should be kept in their own user directory on the server or on removeable media. Exceptions:
- Users from the Biorobotics Lab will have full access to the hard drive on Flighty
- Users will have access to a local non-primary hard drive on machines that have CD burners or video editing equipment (Ecstatic, Vanity, Sympathy, Jubilance, Feckless, Blithe, etc). These non-primary drives can be formatted at any time, by any user, without warning.
- Users will be restricted to 1 gig of server space (in their user directory), unless they have a justifiable work-related need for more space.
- Administrators will have access to user directories for the sole purpose of verifying that they are not exceeding their disk space quota.
- Users from the Biorobotics Lab who need to use the video editing software/hardware will get priority over other users on Jubilance.
- Users from the Biorobotics Lab who need to use Mechanical Desktop will get priority over other users on Vanity (and possibly Blithe).
- Users from the Biorobotics Lab will have full access to the hard drives on the laptop (Flighty). However, administrators reserve the right to format it at any time, without warning.
- Users from the Biorobotics Lab will have access to their own personal space on the web server for the purpose of hosting their own personal webpages. Although there is no set limit on the amount of space you can use, administrators will check to make sure that you are not using an excessive amount.
Policies for this domain are subject to change at any time.
Known Problems
If you use Eudora, don't pull out your disk while Eudora is running, because it will get all confused.
In Explorer, if you double click on an Office document to open it, you might get a message saying that you already have a copy of that file open, and that you can't have two copies of the same file open at the same time. That is because the preview window of Windows Explorer tries to display a preview for you, and that is the first open copy. And then when you open it in Word or Excel, that is the second open copy. So, either disable the preview pane of Windows Explorer, or open the document from within Word or Excel. This should be fixed if we upgrade to Office 2000.
