Eudora

Q: Can I get Eudora to work out of my user directory?

A: The first step is to create a directory in your user directory for you mail.

Go to your user directory on the server (Biorobots or Neuromechanics), and add a "mail" subdirectory.

Next, copy a Eudora shortcut from the Start Menu to your desktop. Right click on this new shortcut, and hit the Properties option in the menu that pops up.

Change the information in the Target field so that it reads: "C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe" "o:\mail\"

Then hit the OK button to close that window.

Finally, rename the shortcut so that it reads "Eudora - Server".

Q: Can I configure Eudora to check my email?

A: Users who want to use Eudora should go to the accessories part of their start menu, and the choose "Eudora - Floppy" or "Eudora - Zip". If the user chooses the former, then their mailbox files and preferences will be stored on a floppy disk (the user will have to insert a floppy to use it). If the user chooses "Eudora - Zip", the configuration files and mailbox files will be stored on the local zip drive (again, the user will have to insert a zip disk to use this).

The reason for this unusual setup is that Eudora is not written for easy use in an NT environment (this is the exact same setup as what is in the Smith Lab right now). This setup allows people to carry a floppy disk or zip disk around with their configuration files, so that they can receive email on any machine. Currently, this is the only way that a user in an NT environment could use Eudora. Assuming that the user does not intend on storing hundreds of emails in their inbox, a floppy disk should be plenty of space. However, floppy disk access is much, much slower than zip drive access. Most users will find the floppy drive to be unacceptably slow. So, most users should choose the zip drive copy.

Users can switch between copies of Eudora. So, if you are using "Eudora - Floppy", and your mailbox files become too large, and you want to start using the "Eudora - Zip" program that is already installed, they should just be able to copy the files from the floppy drive over to a zip disk, and then immediately start using the zip drive copy of Eudora.

If this is the first time that you are using Eudora, insert a blank disk into the drive, and then run the appropriate copy of Eudora from your start menu. A bunch of files will have to be copied over to the disk, so it may take a few seconds to start up.

The first question that you will be asked is whether you want Eudora to be your default mail program. Make your selection. If you are choosing "no", you may want to check the box next to "Don't ask me anymore".

You will then see an introduction screen informing you of the different options you are about to be presented with. After scanning the information, hit the "ok" button.

The new account wizard will be launched. Hit "next" to start the wizard. Choose "Create a brand new email account". Then hit "next".

You will be asked for your name. Enter the information that you would like to show up in the from field of your emails, and then hit "next".

Next, you will have to enter your email address. After typing this in, hit "next".

Next, you will be asked for your login name. Choose the Login ID that you use to pop your mail from the server (i.e. my email address is tew3@po.cwru.edu, so I would enter "tew3"). Then hit "next".

Enter "pop.cwru.edu" or "pop2.cwru.edu" as the incoming mail server. The default option of using a "pop" server (as opposed to an IMAP server) is fine. Then hit "next".

Enter "smtp.cwru.edu" or "pop2.cwru.edu" as the outgoing server. Leave the default option of "allow authentication" checked.

Click "finish" to exit the setup program.

After the setup program is finished, you will be asked to enter your password so that it can pop your mail. Hit "cancel" for now, because the setup procedure is not complete yet. You may also be asked to fill out profile information things. You can just cancel all of that stuff by closing the window that pops up.

Go to the "tools" menu, and choose "options" out of that menu. A window will pop up with "tabs" on the left side, and various fields on the right side. Please note that the configuration information that you are about to read are the recommended settings. There are many other settings that you may want to change. The ones listed here are just the ones that are strongly recommended that you change.

Click the "checking mail" tab. Change "Check for mail every ___ minutes" to whatever setting you are comfortable with. CNS recommends not setting this to check for mail more often than once every 5 minutes, in order to make the load on the pop servers manageable. In this menu, you can also check the box next to "save password" so that you don't have to enter your password every time. Be aware that if you check this box, there is the possibility that your email could be compromised if someone steals or copies your email disk.

Click on the "incoming mail" tab. Many people like to leave their email on the server so that they can pop their mail at work, and then again when they get home. If you would like to leave your mail on the server, check the box next to "leave mail on server", and then specify how long the mail should be left on the server. Remember that you have a fixed amount of space on the pop server. Therefore, setting this to leave your email on the server for more than a few days may cause your mailbox on the server to become full, which will result in incoming mail being bounced back to the sender. The authentication style should be left as "Passwords".

Click on the "sending mail" tab. In the field after "domain to add to unqualified email addresses, add "po.cwru.edu". This way, if you need to send email to tew3@po.cwru.edu, you can just put "tew3" in the recipient field of your email.

Click on the "attachments" tab. Click on the button under "Attachment Directory". Specify a directory in your user directory on the domain controller. This is where your attachments will be saved when they arrive.

Hit "ok" to close the "options" window. Then hit the "check mail" button to pop your mail. You should be asked for you password. Type that in, and then hit "ok".
