Capturing Analog Video

If you are trying to capture video from a Hi-8 camcorder, you will not be able to use the firewire interface in conjuction with the DVtools. You will need to use Premiere.

First, find the section of the tape that you want to capture. Then connect the camcorder to the Blue Box (see picture below).

The top row are the inputs, and the bottom row are the outputs. You will then need to go into the Pinnacle Systems DV500 Control (Start Menu -> Programs -> Pinnacle Systems DV500 -> Tools -> Pinnacle Systems DV500 Control) in order to tell the hardware which input you are using. If you are connecting the camcorder to the Blue Box via an S-video cable, make sure that the settings look like the picture below. If you are using a composite video cable, make sure that it says composite.

Once you are done doing this, you are ready to fire up Adobe Premiere (Start Menu -> Programs -> Pinnacle Systems DV500 -> Adobe Premiere). We are currently using version 5.1.

After the program is launched, Premiere will ask you for new project settings (see below picture).

You are now ready to capture analog video. Go to the File menu, and choose the Capture option. A submenu will pop up with a Motion Capture option.

Choose Motion Capture, and a window will pop up. When you hit play on the camcorder, the video should show up in that pop up window. Hit the record button to start capturing video, and then hit the Escape button when you want to stop. To save that video to a file, go to the file menu, and choose save as. You should store all of your files on the F: drive.

If you would like to put that captured video into a Premiere project, close down the window that has the video in it, and then go to the file menu and choose import file.

Then find the file that you just made, and hit Open. If you are looking for a file that is on the F drive (which is where video editing files should be stored), you will need to first go to the desktop to get to the F: drive.

Double-click on Shortcut to Users (F).
